Continental Tyres’ analysts have recently warned of potential MOT workshop backlogs this September, which may also affect motorists in Salisbury.
For those of you who follow the UK automotive industry, you may have noticed the term “MOT testing” beginning to appear everywhere over the past couple of months – just in time for September, when the peak 'MOT season' is expected to begin. DVSA urges vehicle owners to bring their MOT tests forward as much as they can to avoid the busy Autumn period.
What’s the reason for the MOT backlogs?
The significant increase in demand for MOT tests is a result of millions of tests being postponed in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This means that more than 5 million tests come up for renewal in the second half of 2021. This additional demand undeniably puts pressure on workshops in Salisbury and all over the UK.
The impact of the 2020 MOT extension
Although MOT tests are usually evenly spread throughout the year, five and a half million UK drivers were granted an MOT extension in 2020. As they started re-booking these postponed tests from September 2021 onwards, it has created a huge surge in demand. As a result, September, October and November will be significantly busier than usual to book an MOT test, with more than 1 million additional tests due to take place each month.
Continental Tyres is forecasting a 23% increase in MOT tests due in September, which is expected to increase to over 40% in November and 50% in December.
